Right lads I'm thinking of taking on replacing the head gasket my self, I'm fairly handy with the spanners,

but haven't taken on anything of this magnitude before is there any how to guides anywhere? Parts wise i know i'll be needing this

and im guessing the multi layer steel head gasket is the one to go for.

Then when i've got the head off take it to my local machine shop for them to have a good look at it to check out the integrity of it.

then when im putting it back together im guessing it would be a good idea to get a set of these

So...what am i missing? am i being over ambitious? Im in no rush to get the car back on the road and can take my time with it.

When reading the thread and seeing the temp it got to and the result I knew where this was going! the last time I had that behaviour it was because the thermostat had jammed leaving a short coolant circuit, leading to overheating and catastrophic HGF. I even had the sludge dripping out of the side scoops!

and that was with a PRRT thermostat! don't know what that was about. Head gasket changes aren't brain surgery, but they're bleedin awkward, I take the clam off to make life easier. The landrover headgasket's a two piece Item, and you'll probably be able to find heated discussions about whether it's the best option or not elsewhere on the Web. Last thing I saw was that they were the best option if the liner heights are a bit uneven, but possibly dont have as much clamping force as the original type so could be more susceptable to fail in big power conversions.(proper big, not 135/160 big) .

I've used the landy multi-layer system ones before and not had any problem with them. one did 7000 miles in a thrashed VHPD engine before I saw sense and sold it.

if you change the head gasket, then make sure the liner height s are within tolerance - otherwise it may go again.
might be worth a call to Dave Andrews (DVA) - very clued up and happy to give advice + can supply parts if necessary.
