John,
The only place I would take it to is http://www.amacengineering.co.uk/
I know he's got the knowledge and kit to make a good job. I have no idea of prices but EuropaTC on here has recently had an engine done so he may be able to help with info.
Don't just take it to any old engine recon place, they will be cheaper but quality work costs.
Cheers

Good evening itdjohn. I used them after a recommendation by John. Alistair is a real gent, he knows his stuff and I would have no reservations recommending him to anyone.Cost was 3264 that was strip down, machine balance, new everything and re assembly. It was cheaper than that because he had forgotten to charge me for pistons. I gave him a ring and he had a new invoice was drawn up. The only item that I paid for was a tony thompson water pump cassette and front plate. That isn't a firm price as I suppose it all depends what he finds when he stripps down. He is a top man. I seldom recommend as there aren't the people around who deserve it. Give him a call, there is only him, his son and an apprentice. He rebuilds everything including Astons and Jags

Forgot to mention, you have to take the engine to him as he has no facilities to remove engines. There is a 70's 80's car repair specialist in the town who will undertake the task and store your car.
all the best

Thanks for your information I took the engine to Amac and they rebuilt it and did a good job. I have now fitted into the car (not without some problems) and tomorrow will try to get it started. Wish me luck.
