I fitted new units and updated bulbs. Many go for HIDS, heard rumours of some failing MOT with them but not sure how true.

The beam pattern disappears completely but as long as they're not above the height line, ie dazzling you should be fine.

Mine were superb till my MOT, dazzling the fook out of 4x4 owners for a change instead of getting blinded !

I have had HID's on my S1 for about 5 years and never had a problem with MOT''s

If you can not be bothered with the wiring etc, you could try Osram Nightbrakers, i have these in our lasses ST (full beam) to match the factory fit HID's, thye are nice and bright and white

Well I've now carried out a bit of work as follows. HID lamps fitted on dip and main beam, which were a bit of a pita due to lack of space and a couple of seized bolts, but all replaced and copper lubed to save time in the future. must say the effort is well worth it. I can now drive at night as the car was intended, so highly recommend. Also fitted the gear linkage kit along with a quickshift. Easy and straightforward (I have a pit in the garage which makes life a lot easier) but again what a difference. Nice crisp short throw action, no longer feels like a blind man stirring porridge. Would certainly recommend this mod too. That was going to be the end of tweaking but I've got a hankering for a nice thick steering wheel, with a flat bottom. (That's the wheel not me!) Anyone done that? Advice would be helpful.

Ordered the HID kit for my S2 last week, should arrive this week. The results you have had sound encouraging! When I first got my S2 I thought I was losing my eyesight!

Had the Elise MOT'D last week, and no problem with the HID's. Took it across to Phoenix in Accrington, and can't speak highly enough of them. As the car was new to me I wanted a full inspection, so spent most of the day under and around the car with Ollie. It was reassuring to know that all was well and that the car is a good un. Brilliant to find somewhere that not only clearly knows the cars inside out, but actively encourages involvement, and is happy to pass on money saving tips.Work carried out was as follows.

Other forums are already having posts about cars failing the MOT with HIDs. Wife's nephew has too VW he had HIDs fitted to and both failed (until he found someone friendlier to retest them).

Changes to MOT from 1st January 2012

Lighting

Products on the lens or light source that obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour will become a reason for failure – applies to front/rear position lamps, registration plate lamps, stop lamps, rear fog and direction indicators.

Headlight requirements are updated to take account of the particular characteristics of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps.

HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. A car will fail if a mandatory headlamp cleaning or levelling system is missing, doesn't work or is obviously defective.

Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.

If a headlamp bulb is not seated correctly the resulting beam pattern will be indistinct and this will result in a test fail.

A catalytic converter fitted as original equipment but missing will be a reason for failure.

Indeed regs re lights do not come in until April (neighbour runs and MOT centre)

having said all that on the S! it is a 2 mintue job a side to refit the standard bulbs
