Time to move on - any tips?

Going to sell my Evora S - been a fantastic 15 months but need to release some capital for a house move.

Will be back in a Lotus soon no doubt.

So any tips for selling it? Classifieds on here and Pistonheads obviously but what would you look for in the advert?

service history, receipts for any upgrades you have had any points that make your car different, good spread of pic, good back ground, good angles. No dogs sat in your car (real turn off)

I sold mine back to JCT, all the dealers I spoke to at the time wanted it as they said there was a shortage of NAs on the market but JCT offered a much better deal - they had a couple of people in mind for it and it was sold within 24 hours.

Problem with selling a newish car privately is people spending that sort of money want a dealer warranty etc.

Take lots of pictures. Dunno what you're restricted to on those sites these days but whatever it is, fill it.
Use a camera, not a phone. Even a £100 compact will beat pics from a good phone.

It's always amazed me. In adverts for things costing tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds (houses & cars) you get dealers and estate agents taking drab shots in a "that'll do" style.

A bit of washing / photo effort = you get nearer to what you want for the car and / or it sells quicker.

Thing is, pay £37K at the dealer and you'll get a warranty, probably a couple of tyres, mats, etc that you haggle into the deal. Private buyers want the price to be at least £2-3K lower on a product in the that price range, otherwise they'd rather pay the dealer price and have the dealer back up.

I would agree with softlips. The dealer can also offer part exchange which is a strong possibility in that price range, and a dealership is less personal. If you are only 1k less than a dealer, then unless your car has a bag full of goodies with it and is in exceptional condition I think you will struggle. Dealer also has overheads to meet.

How quickly do you want your money has to be considered, noting impending house move etc, if you can hold out you may have the buyer come along who wants just your spec and willing to pay the premium to get it (assuming yours is mint etc) however as you wait it is obviously getting older and devaluing more.

I remember the horror stories re cost of clutch etc (don't know if these can be done for less these days) therefore purchases who know their stuff would likely want a warranty or a big discount to cover the risk of things going wrong.

Also would I risk handing over £30k cash to some guy where I have zero comeback if it goes wrong, e.g. find previous crash damage, the seller was actually moving on the car due to issues that are raising their noses that will not likely show up on a short test drive, seller is getting divorced and wife knows nothing of sale and wife comes after car (this does happen).

In view of the above I wouldn't personally consider buying from private sale without a big 'discount' against dealer prices)

Also you need to remember the 'market' is changing, it is no longer the latest/fastest model etc.

You do have some rights when buying off a private seller, an Impreza that I bought had a bodged up headgasket, I eventually got a full refund but if it had gone to court (which it nearly did), the private seller can be awkward and offer to pay you back something like £5pw.

AA inspection would give some peace of mind.

You do have a lot more rights with a dealer.
